Significant
Contributions if the field
Intraocular lens
implants
Introduced lens implantation in India in 1976.Introduced
Singh-Worst iris claw lens in 1979, which is now accepted world wide. Iris claw
lens was introduced in the USA, 18 years after it was introduced by me in
India.Largest experience in the world with iris claw lens. Operated on the
President of India in 1985, with this very lens.
Trained over 450 eye surgeons from all parts of India with
the support of Rotary International and Amritsar Rotary Club.
Glaucoma
Developed many new techniques of glaucoma surgery
1.Pre-trabecular Filtration (1978),Trans.ophth.soc.qof UK.
2.Transciliary filtration for intractable glaucoma,
Trans.ophth.soc of UK, 1979.
2.Microtrephine operation for glaucoma.(1986) Proceedings
of International Congress of Ophthalmology.
3.Trans-ciliary filtration using Fugo plasma knife (2001),
It drains the posterior chamber.
4.Micro-track filtration (2004): Using Fugo blade, it
creates a 200 micron track in to the anterior chamber. It is the least
traumatic operation for glaucoma.
First in India to use “cross linked sodium hyaluronate” and
“collagen matrix” in glaucoma surgery.Researching its utility in Microtrack
filtration (2011)
Keratoprosthesis:
Developed artificial cornea called Singh-Worst
keratoprosthesis in 1979. Paralimbal keratoprosthesis technique (1981) This
surgery is done in thsoe corneal blind patients, that are unfit for cornea
graft surgery. In this field, my institution has the largest experience in the
world.
Ptosis (drooping eye
lids)
Ptosis is one of the most difficult condition to treat. The
available techniques produced corneal dryness and inability to close the
operated lid. I have designed two techniques that are not only better than
classical techniques, but also are free from the defects mentioned above. They
are:
1. Orbicularis plication, a new technique (1996)
2. A new technique of Plication of levator palpebrae
superioris (2004)
Refractive lens
surgery
Iris claw lens for phakic high hypermetropes, 1987. First
in the world to start this surgery for patients with high plus number.
Laser Refractive
Surgery
This laser surgery is used to reduce or remove the
spectacle number. First to introduce excimer laser in India in 1991. First in
the world to employ it for refractive surgery in the young patients (1994).
Most experienced in the world on the use of laser surgery for high to very high
myopia.
Fugo blade
Applications
First to use Fugo Plasma Blade in the world of
ophthalmology in 1999.Since then it has been pioneered and extensively used in
my institution in the fields of cataract, glaucoma, strabismus, oculoplastic and
vitreo-retinal surgery.
Published the book “The applications of Fugo Blade” in
2010)
Conjunctival and
corneal lymphatic system
This system of lymphatics was unknown to the eye surgeons
before 2000, when it was demonstrated by me. Charted extensive conjunctival lymphatic system. Recently charted important network of
channels in the cornea and discovered that the area of the so called “lucid
interval” in the corneal periphery is in fact a sinusoidal channel. It is named
“Singh Canal”.

Dr. Daljit Singh ji,
ReplyDeleteI have read both of your books "Dooja Passa" & Sacch di bhaal wich" and I liked them very much. Your books are real eye openers. I wish I could meet you personally at Amritsar. Thanks for sharing your deep research in these books, which has given a "Third Eye" to your readers....!!!
